Housing Needed For Coordinated Campaign Staff

The Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign has dedicated a full time staff person to the New River Valley to help elect the ticket of Creigh Deeds, Jody Wagner, Steve Shannon and Peggy Frank.  All we need to do is find him a place to live through Election Day in November.  Don Moss has been here for several weeks and has been working hard, but has already had to move due to housing only being temporary in nature.  Do you have a spare room that you could offer for more permanent housing?  If so, please reply to this e-mail or call Steve or Victoria Cochran at 953-0290 or Don at 804.869.1279.  It’s wonderful that the Democratic Party statewide sees the potential for a big victory in Montgomery County.  Let’s do our part to help out the cause.

Volunteers Needed for Peggy Frank Campaign
and Coordinated Campaign

As noted above, the campaign is underway to elect Peggy Frank to the House of Delegates and identify and turn out voters for the statewide Deeds-Wagner-Shannon ticket.  If you have a few hours to volunteer, contact Don Moss at 804.869.1279.  Yes, we have a paid staff person, but electing candidates is NOT a one person job as we learned last year.  Let’s do everything we can to keep Virginia Blue by making Montgomery County even bluer!

Peggy Frank Receives Democratic Nomination for the

7th District in the Virginia House of Delegates

(Radford, VA) Peggy Frank, Assistant Commonwealths Attorney in Pulaski County received the Democratic Nomination for the 7th District in the Virginia House of Delegates Wednesday night at the 7th District Democratic Caucus in Radford.

The attendees at the caucus unanimously elected Frank as their nominee by acclamation. Addressing the caucus, Frank outlined her agenda for the 7th District, emphasizing her commitment to bipartisanship, job creation, making healthcare more affordable, and improving education and public safety.

Frank pledged her support for investments in education, public safety and the job creation efforts of Congressman Rick Boucher and Governor Tim Kaine, stating, “In the House of Delegates I will fight to bring good paying jobs to the district and because every person, young and old, deserves a quality education and affordable healthcare, I will work hard to improve education and reduce the cost of healthcare.”

Frank reminded the audience that the campaign will be long and time consuming, but worthwhile because “we deserve a delegate who will put aside partisanship and stand up for education, good jobs, healthcare, and the needs of the 7th District.”

Peggy Frank has over 18 years of experience as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in Montgomery and Pulaski Counties. She currently serves as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in Pulaski County. She and her husband Marshall have lived in the New Rover Valley for over 22 years and are the proud parents of three children.

Gubernatorial Candidates Debate in Blacksburg

DEMOS042909LYR 543a

Left to Right, the candidates Brian Moran, Creigh Deeds, and Terry McAuliffe

Last Wednesday, April 29, the three candidates running in the June 9th primary to be the Democratic nominee for Governor of Virginia debated in Blacksburg at the Lyric Theatre. An overflow crowd listened attentively as Brian Moran, Creigh Deeds, and Terry McAuliffe answered questions submitted previously online. While not a true debate, there still were times when the candidates challenged each other on the issues and "mixed-it-up," showing their personalities. What made this debate different from the other four occurring throughout the state is that it was organized by progressive blogger, Ben Tribbett of Not Larry Sabato (NLS) and was sponsored by NLS and two other progressive blogs, Huffington Post whose political blogger, Nico Pitney served as a questioner along with Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake. David Grant of the Collegiate Times rounded out the panel with Tribbett servng as moderator. In addition to the live audience, hundreds of people were able to listen via a live stream online and respond in real time to the candidates' remarks using Twitter, a popular social networking site.

Prior to the debate, Steve Cochran, chair of MCDC introduced local office-holders and other political guests; Dickie Cranwell, head of the Democratic Party of Virginia and House of Delegates member, Jim Shuler both offered short remarks; and Steve Shannon, Democratic nominee for Attorney General and a new face to many, introduced himself to the Southwest Virginia audience.

By all accounts, the debate was a success. Local and state media including several bloggers covered the event, candidates were able to advance their views on the issues, and perhaps because this was a debate in which any concerned citizen could submit questions, some very interesting inquiries that have not been discussed previously, were placed before the candidates.

(Larry Middleton, official photographer for MCDC cpvered tje Senator Mark Warner visit to Radford University this week. The following is his write-up of his day at the university culminating in a pick-up game between two squads from the 2009 Big South Men's Basketball championship team.)

U.S. Senator Mark Warner (Democrat, Virginia) 'picked-up' the 'pick-up' scrimmage at Radford University's Dedmon Center, on Tuesday afternoon.

Before play began, Senator Warner said that, "I must be out of my mind.  These guys are big; they're going to run over me.  But, I learned, years ago, to use my body to help my moves.  I'm just glad to be here. After RU's fantastic year, I am honored to join the team."

Senator Warner played hoops after hosting a large group of students studying economics at the university, earlier in the day.  Penelope Kyle, RU President, hosted both the economics summit, and the ballgame.  "I'm thrilled that Senator Warner could visit. It means a lot to all of us.  Our economics discussion was very well received.  What a game!  He's a tough guy! I hope he can return, soon!"

Driving the ball down the court, sharing the ball with his teammates, passing to those 'in the lane'....Warner still scored several baskets, using his well-remembered spins and other moves.

After the scrimmage, Senator Warner talked with the players, from Eastern Europeans, to Wytheville, VA, hoopsters.  Skeeter's restaurant in Wytheville, specializing in their famous hot-dogs, was 'common ground' to the Senator and some players. Warner had visited Wytheville, earlier in the day, for a 'town hall' style meeting that was well-attended.

The jovial audience and players seemed to enjoy seeing Senator Warner 'give it his all.'  One attendee said that, "I think the players really went for it.  I think they forgot it was just a fun scrimmage.  They sure didn't give many breaks to the Senator!"

Scoring several hoops in the  'round-ball' endeavor, Senator Mark Warner ended his venue with several interviews.  His 40-minute foray didn't faze him.  I think he's ready for another scrimmage!

For your viewing pleasure and a walk down memory lane
when we Democrats were very excited to celebrate our candidates,
here are pictures and information about the
2008 Montgomery County Democrats' Fall Dinner

Montgomery County Democrats celebrated their best ever Fall Dinner with over 350 attendees in high spirits because of the Obama debate performance and polls showing Virginia in play for the first time in over 40 years. Before dinner, guests circulated throughout Shultz Dining Hall on the VA Tech campus, greeting friends, perusing the silent auction items, a new feature this year, and purchasing “Donkey Gear” to show their Democratic spirit. The dinner had the highest attendance ever of any MCDC fall event, perhaps because of the slate of guest speakers including Governor Tim Kaine, the Keynoter, former Governor Mark Warner, the featured speaker during the reception hour, 2009 Gubernatorial hopeful State Senator Creigh Deeds, former DNC Chair, Terry McAuliffe, who is considering a run for governor, and Jody Wagner, who is seeking the Lieutenant Governor position next year.
