Montgomery County Democratic Committee
The Montgomery County Democratic Committee (MCDC) works to elect top quality candidates for County, State and Federal offices. We are a grassroots organization, with members representing each of the districts within Montgomery County, Virginia.
MCDC holds regular organizational meetings as well as social events, including our major fundraiser each year, the Fall Dinner.
Of course every year is an election year in Virginia, so we are always helping with campaigns at some level. Please join us at our next event!
MCDC Summer Picnic Saturday, July 31
Our Summer picnic will be July 31, at Nellie's Cave Park (map link) in Blacksburg, beginning at 5:00pm. It's a potluck picnic, so please bring a dish to share. MCDC will provide drinks, utensils and plates. Folding chairs are a good idea as well, in case we have an overflow crowd.
Invited guests include Rick Boucher, John Edwards, Jim Shuler and others! Check out the new Donkey Gear, newly available at this event!
Families are welcome, there's a playground and basketball court next to the pavilion. $5 per person, $10 per family.
Celebrate President Obama’s Birthday with Democrats
This Wednesday, August 4, is an exciting day for Democrats. Not only are we having our monthly social at Lefty’s for Lefties, but also, it’s President Obama’s Birthday! We want a big crowd at Lefty’s (1202 South Main Street in Blacksburg) at 5:30-7:00 PM to show our support of the president. If you have an Obama T-shirt, wear it. If not, sport our MCDC Democratic T-shirt and an Obama button.
That’s not all…
After our fun at Lefty’s, Organizing for America (the spin-off group of Organizing for Obama), will host a dessert for the Lefty’s crowd at 7 PM. Laura Kleiner, the local OFA representative, has invited us to her house for dessert. It’s close to Lefty’s on the south side of town. Come and celebrate with Laura at 1358 Falcon Ridge Rd., Blacksburg, just off Deercroft Dr.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PRESIDENT OBAMA!
Rick Boucher Talks Domestic And Foreign Policy With Montgomery County Voters
Rep. Rick Boucher traveled to Blacksburg, Va., to answer questions from a full house of Montgomery County voters at the Bull and Bones restaurant on Monday, June 21. Sponsored by Democracy Prevails, the town hall-style meeting gave Boucher an opportunity to explain his stance on a number of hot-button issues and discuss the importance of the upcoming mid-term election to more than 60 voters.
After stressing his 27 years of service in the 9th District and the need to maintain Democratic control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Boucher explained his vote against health care reform legislation in March. Although the congressman supports the benefits of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, he ultimately voted against the measure because of concerns about cuts to Medicare. Boucher wants to strengthen the Medicare program to ensure that residents in the 9th District continue to receive quality, affordable care.
Boucher also allayed fears about Social Security, explaining that the federal government has funding to support the program under the current model until 2037. The congressman answered additional questions about energy and environmental issues, the U.S. strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan, the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the Citizens United ruling on corporate-sponsored political advertising.
A native of Abingdon, Va., Boucher boasts high ratings from women's, environmental, and labor groups and has a strong track record in supporting the 9th District's economic well-being.
